Engineers and Producers

It"s been said that an engineer or producer is only as good as his last record. A record company that is footing the bill for group x isn't going let an engineer or producer make albums that the record company can't sell. Not very many times anyway. This means that the producer has to get it right every time. Although the cost of making an album has been steadily going down, it can still be very expensive. To ensure that the record stays within budget and has the right sound, the record company or band hires people that have had success in the past with similar albums. These people have the knowledge, experience and personality to bring it all together. Their contribution to the album can be substantial, including anything from suggesting arrangements, structure and melody lines to singing and playing instruments. Always remember that it is in the best interest of the engineer or producer to make a great album. His future, to some degree depends on it.

The job of the engineer:

Typically the engineer concerns himself with the technical aspects of making a recording. This includes:

  • Setting up the studio for the session.
  • Running the tape machines or computer.
  • Paying close attention to all the signal paths.
  • Getting sounds. (although the band and producer will often contribute to this process)
  • Setting up great headphone mixes.

The job of the producer:

The job of the producer can take many forms. Including:

  • Getting the energy up and keeping people motivated.
  • Providing direction for the project and keeping it on track.
  • Ensuring the project stays within budget.
  • Making sure that the record company is happy with the album.
  • Making sure that the artist is happy with the project.
  • Keeping the peace.
