Gain Structure
Gain Structure is very important. The many amplifiers that are in a mixer or signal processor work best at certain levels. The mic pre, the EQ the Aux Sends and the Busses or sub groups all have amplifiers in them. Setting them as close to Unity Gain at each stage will ensure that you get the most from your gear.

Gain Structure tips:

  • Setting proper gain structure starts at the microphone. Loud signals might require the use of the Pad on the mic but make sure it is off if it's not necessary.
  • Read the manual for your gear to find out what the Inputs and Outputs are calibrated to.
  • Use the "Direct Outs" on your mixer for recording. You can bypass some gain stages in this way.
  • Find "Unity Gain" on your mixer and try to end up there before you record something.

The up side:

  • Lower noize floor
  • Less hiss
  • The signal path will allow for signals with greater dynamic range.
  • Increased headroom
  • Less distortion
